Otis Lennon

Too bad this was the first day we had like 25 percent of the class out!
The make ups for the standardized test are Thursday. We know Lauren will be out (hi, Lauren! How are you feeling??), but maybe the others will be back and able to participate.....I hope so.

It was raining really hard when I left school in the dark last night, and this morning, too...I didn't realize that NJ had as much of other hurricane-related effects until Kyle told us his dad was out all night dealing with the power outages around the state!

Ok, I just updated the Math-a-thon totals. As of today we have 25 envelopes returned for a total of $2153.55!

Time to get going.....See you tomorrow!

Oh, by the way, if you were wondering where you could find a nice list of word problem solving strategies with well explained examples, look no further! It's here....

Math-a-thon Update

Just a quick note........with thirteen students' envelopes turned in so far, we have a total of $1000.90 raised for St. Jude's! That is so awesome! Thank you all so much!

Our official campaign closing date is Thursday, October 27, so aim for that to get in on the first report, but we will be taking money through the end of October for the second report in. There is still time to sign up and help. Permission slips, collection envelopes, booklets (and/or CD's) for fourth and fifth graders are available in Room 308.
[People can donate online: http://www.mathathonwired.org (Find our school, NJ, Delran...)

Have a great week-end! (Try to stay dry!)

Daily news

Hi!
Working backwards for the day, I can tell you that the room and desk arrangement is different now. I hope it helps and you like it!
Also, I went to the bank with the UNICEF coins and somebody's two dollar bills and 7 cents of mine to even it out and it was another $50! Whoo hoo!
(So can you figure out how much we had in coins??? Haha! Always a math problem somewhere!)
I hope you enjoyed our first experience today with evaluating websites. Which one did you like the most and why?
Have you seen the bus evacuation photos on our private website? Go, Jordan, go!
Have a great night and see you tomorrow!

Math-a-thon update

With six early returns in, it appears we have $549.50 already. Wow.
We did a lot of calculating based on that....What if 600 of our 600 plus school population achieved the same quota? That would be $54,950!!!! Wow. But, considering our average participation has been around 70 students, that would still be over $5495...wow again. Then someone in our class said she was bringing in $237 ! Wow!

St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital is a great place. We are so proud to be helping them out again this year (our fourth).

If you are interested in checking out what's happening there, and the Math-a-thon in particular, the website is: http://www.mathathon.org

Snail mail start

In an impressive showing of interest, speed, and content, our class created a complete set of snail mail letters to be sent to our soon-to-be e-pals in Harbor Beach.

The enthusiasm and high energy devoted to the task speaks highly of our Michigan friends' appeal.

We are looking forward to hearing back ASAP.

A special shout out here to my friend, August, who took the time to view the new blog on its birthday yesterday!

E-pals update

The good news is....we have the names......the bad news is.....we have to snail mail our introductions, because they aren't set up yet. (Their MEAP testing took two weeks!) Meanwhile, we have our accounts all revved and ready to go. Hmm....who do we know with epal accounts........?

Hooray! We have a blog!

Well, I took one look at Mrs. Bieg's blog today and said, "We should have one of those!" so here we are. Whether we use it or not depends on us. We shall see what happens.

If we're keeping a daily record, I think the best thing about today was reading the Sideways Stories excerpt in our reading book. Louis Sachar is soo funny, don't you think? Those of us who have already read it still appreciated his dry humor and flagrant plays on words just as much as ever!

Hooray for the students who have already completed the Math-a-thon booklet and turned in their donations. (Of course, our hero is Tommy, the third grader who has gone through the 3rd and 4th grade fun books and is on 5th grade now!)

Michael from the other science class turned in a very heavy UNICEF box today to add to our collection. (Did you all know people can donate to us online? Yes...the URL is just a click away if you go to http://teacherweb.com/NJ/Delran/Sallee and click on the homework section. Actually, you can sign up to donate to the math-a-thon from there too. (Ah, technology and fundraising......perfect together!)

Well, I'd better get back to work....after I write a comment to Mrs. Bieg in Japan on her blog.....

Have a great night and come back again and see if this site grows and prospers (g'night Mr. Spock...wherever you are.......)
